Mr John J Culleton

CSC, psc, pcfsc, BA, GAICD

John Culleton was appointed to the Rice Marketing Board for the State of New South Wales (RMB) in 2013 and is currently its Chair. He also chairs the NSW Fish Passage Task Force which reports to the Minister for Agriculture and for Western New South Wales – the Task Force’s primary function is to optimise the opportunities for native fish to move more freely, and therefore reproduce more readily, throughout NSW’s inland river systems.

John’s initial contact with the NSW rice industry was as CEO of Coleambally Irrigation Co-operative Limited (CICL) where he was employed from 2008 to 2017. During 2011-2017, he also served as a member of the National Irrigators’ Council Board. In addition, John was a member of the Murrumbidgee Valley Stakeholders’ Group (a group formed in response to the Murray-Darling Basin Plan) and the Murrumbidgee Water Sharing Plan, Stakeholders’ Advisory Panel – so he is well versed in the challenges that the rice industry has been presented as a result of the National Water Initiative, the Murray-Darling Basin Plan and the ACCC’s water reforms.

Before joining CICL, John held roles as Deputy Chief Investigator for the NSW Office of Transport Safety Investigations and as NSW/ACT State Manager of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, but these were relatively short roles that were preceded by 32 years in Australian Army. As an Infantry Officer, John commanded at platoon, company and battalion levels. He also served in the Middle East, Malaysia, Canada and the US. His final posting in the Army was as Australia’s Defence Attaché to the United Nations in New York.
